Is Sigiriya better to climb early morning or in the afternoon?

I will be in Dambulla for two days. I've read that Sigiriya gets very hot and crowded. When is the best time to climb, and is Pidurangala a good alternative for sunrise?

Go when the gates open at 7:00 AM. You'll beat the heat and the tour buses. Allow 2-3 hours. For sunrise, Pidurangala is the better choice - it opens earlier, it's cheaper, and you get a view OF Sigiriya rock.

Do both! Pidurangala for sunrise, then Sigiriya right after at opening time. Bring 2 litres of water.

Afternoon around 4 PM is also nice for sunset, but the last entry is around 5 PM so don't be late.
