A Slow Guide to Ella
Ella is small enough to walk across in fifteen minutes and good enough to stay a week. Most travellers give it a night between train rides; that is the mistake. Ella is built for slowness.
The famous train arrives over the Nine Arch Bridge, and yes, you should watch it — but go for the first crossing of the day, when the valley is full of mist and the tour buses are still asleep in Bandarawela. Stand on the far hillside, not the bridge itself, and you will have it nearly to yourself.
Little Adam''s Peak is the gentlest big view in the country: an hour up through tea, a flat summit, and the whole green bowl of Ella Gap spread out beneath you. Do it in the late afternoon and stay for the light.
The rest is eating and tea and the long porch evenings that Ella does better than anywhere. Order the rice and curry, accept the second helping, and book another night before you leave. You will want it.
